The best snorkeling near Playa del Carmen can be found in Puerto Morelos. You have two options here, you can do a tour, or swim out to the reef in the swimming. I like Akumal. Yal Ku lagoon is a great option though you have to pay admission. That said, it's easier snorkeling and there are amenities. Playacar Beach is great for beginner snorkelers, and it's absolutely packed with marine life. You don't need to swim very far at all to see all.
